Tips to prepare for your driving test.
Before you can go for your P1 licence, you must be at least 17 years old, have held a learner driver’s licence (Ls) for a minimum of 12 months, and completed at least 120 hours in your log book, including 20 hours of night driving.
Passing your driving test is about more than simply controlling the vehicle. Examiners assess your observation skills, hazard awareness, decision-making, vehicle control and ability to follow road rules. The following tips can help you arrive prepared and confident on test day.
Tip 1: Arrive early and stay relaxed
Being late can add unnecessary stress before your test even begins. We recommend arriving at least 10 minutes before your scheduled test time to allow enough time to park, gather your documents and settle your nerves.
Take a few deep breaths and remember that the driving test is simply an opportunity to demonstrate the safe driving skills you have already learned. Arriving early also gives you time to familiarise yourself with the testing centre and surrounding area.
Tip 2: Park in the designated Service NSW test bays
Before your test begins, ensure your vehicle is parked in one of the designated driving test parking bays at the Service NSW centre.
This helps ensure the test starts smoothly and demonstrates that you have followed the testing centre’s requirements. If you’re unsure where to park, arrive early and ask a staff member for assistance.
Tip 3: Practise your manoeuvres in different locations
Many learner drivers become comfortable practising manoeuvres in the same streets and locations. However, your driving test could require you to perform these manoeuvres in unfamiliar areas.
Make sure you are confident performing:
- Reverse parking
- Kerbside parking
- Three-point turns (if required)
- U-turns where permitted
- Vehicle positioning
- Observation checks and mirror use
Practising in different suburbs, traffic conditions and road environments will help you feel more confident regardless of where the examiner asks you to perform a manoeuvre.
Tip 4: Make sure your vehicle is test ready
If you are using your own vehicle for the driving test, it must meet Service NSW safety requirements.
Before test day, check:
- Brake lights are working
- Indicators are functioning correctly
- Headlights are operational
- Tyres are in good condition
- Registration is current
- Windscreen is clean and free from significant damage
- Seatbelts are functioning properly
A vehicle defect could result in your test being cancelled before it even begins.
Tip 5: Double-check your paperwork
Ensure all required paperwork has been completed correctly before arriving for your test.
This includes:
- Your learner licence
- Completed log book
- Any required declarations or documentation
- Test booking confirmation
Checking everything beforehand can help avoid delays, disappointment and the possibility of having to reschedule your test.
